Description: The tribal women make silk from cocoons(Wildly grown on non-mulberry trees) and spin, weave silk fabric. Starting with preparation of thread to weaving, dying and making embroideries, all processes are undertaken manually using age old traditional tools and machines.

The fabric has been printed with Madhubani Art (An ancient art form of this region). This art form has ritual content for particular occasions, such as birth or marriage, and festivals, such as Holi, Surya Shasti, Kali Puja, Upanayana, and Durga Puja.

Place of Origin: Bihar, Jharkhand (India).

  2. It has rich coarse texture.
  3. It is light and airy.
  4. It gives a cool n comfortable feeling.
  5. It is delicate and stiff in nature.

Suggestion for Maintenance:

  1. Dry cleaning is the safest option for Tussar.
  2. Dry cleaned Tussar should not be wrapped in plastic. Silks need to breathe.
  3. In case you want to hand wash your Tussar fabric, use cold water and a mild liquid soap meant for delicate clothes.
  4. Do not wring excess water out. Dry fabric in shade as sun may cause the fabric to fade.
  5. Wash dark colors separately and never use chemical bleach.

Tussar Silk , also often referred to as ‘Wild Silk is an exquisite thread obtained from a wide winged moth that is yellowish-brown in colour. The scientific name of these moths is Antheraea Paphia and they are a part of the group known as Emperor Moths or Saturnids.

The states of Bihar & Jharkhand are known for Tussar silk and the fabrics woven from the silk. Tussar silk is a non-mulberry silk that is also known as ‘Wild Silk’ as it is produced from a wide winged moth that is yellowish brown in colour and feeds on wild forest. It is a coarser variety of silk and is lot cooler, porous and breathable than other silk varieties. The most notable feature of this silk is in its dyeing technique that give them a mesmerizing look. The state is also known for Madhubani or Mithila painting. It is a folk painting done by hands using natural colours and dyes. Though conventionally this art form was done to decorate and add colours to home, but with changing times, it has now been done on other products. Madhubani painting is generally done on Tussar silk weaved in Bihar. These fabric is considered extremely rich and ethnic.
